The US state of Washington is now offering “a firecracker for a sting” to encourage the population to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Cannabis dispensaries in this state are licensed to offer a pre-rolled joint to anyone at least 21 years of age who will be vaccinated on site.
The territory legalized the use of recreational cannabis in 2012. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, 54% of adults in the state received at least one dose of the vaccine. But the pace has dropped like everywhere in the United States, and the most original initiatives to encourage people to take the plunge have multiplied in recent weeks.
Weapons to be won in West Virginia
Last month, Washington state allowed bars and other drinking establishments to offer alcoholic consumption to adults who have been vaccinated. Other states, such as California and Ohio, have devised “lotteries” offering money, university scholarships and other prizes of all kinds to people who have been vaccinated.
Others offered seats for sporting events, plane tickets, beers or even pick-ups. West Virginia even allowed hunting rifles to be won. In Arizona, some cannabis dispensaries had already distributed a sample of their products to customers coming to be vaccinated on site.
President Joe Biden has set a goal that 70% of adults have received at least one injection of the anti-Covid vaccine by July 4, the US national holiday. According to the latest figures from the health authorities, this rate is currently 63.7%.
