Peru reassessed on Monday the number of people who died from Covid-19 in the country, increasing it from 69,000 to 180,000, on the recommendations of a technical council, announced the number two of the government, Violeta Bermudez. ” Starting today […] we are going to have more exhaustive figures which will be of great use in managing the pandemic, ”the President of the Council of Ministers declared at a press conference.

According to this technical council set up in April and made up of Peruvian experts and the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of deaths due to Covid-19 stood on May 22 at 180,764 in this country of 33 millions of inhabitants. The previous report, arrested on Sunday, reported 69,342 dead.

The technical council proposed to modify the criteria for recording deaths after having estimated that “the current methodology has limits which leads to an underestimation of the number of deaths from Covid-19”. From now on, people who meet seven technical criteria, including proven contaminations, but also “probable cases with an epidemiological link with a confirmed case” will be counted as “dead from Covid-19”. “A suspected case of Covid-19 which presents a clinical framework compatible with the disease” will also be taken into account.
