Montpellier airport (Hérault) is back on track. The Covid-19 crisis, which grounded planes for many months, seems far away. Emmanuel Brehmer, Chairman of the Executive Board, is even delighted with the performance of his platform, despite the difficult context for the aeronautics sector: the epidemic, of course, but also competition with the train on intranational journeys, the call from environmentalists to put the kibosh on the plane. Or the war in Ukraine.

In 2021, the airport ended the year with 1.1 million passengers, compared to 805,000 in 2020 and 1.9 million in 2019. “Yes, we took a hit, a big slowdown even where we had to take off, ”points out Emmanuel Brehmer. But “we are starting again in 2022 with a strong ambition, since the budget provides for 88% of traffic in 2019, when most millionaire airports are on average at 70%. »

What are the summer destinations?

To finally take off, it has been planning since its restructuring a few years ago, the airport is banking this summer on a program of flights to 16 countries. A record. It will always be possible to fly to the Maghreb (Tunis in Tunisia, Algiers in Algeria, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech and Nador in Morocco), or Greece and its islands (Athens, Santorini, Heraklion), big success of the airport. But also northern Europe (Copenhagen in Denmark, Stockholm in Sweden, Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Berlin in Germany), London in England or Lisbon in Portugal.

There are new things this summer: Seville in Spain, Split in Croatia, Rome in Italy, Oslo in Norway, Mykonos in Greece and Oudja in Morocco. However, the intranational routes remain one of the strong points of the Hérault platform, with, always, flights to Brest, Caen, Rennes, Nantes, Lille, Strasbourg, Bastia, Ajaccio. And of course, flights to Paris, with which the airport hopes to attract a business clientele.

With this enticing program, the platform hopes to convince locals that Montpellier is the place to go, and not elsewhere. “It’s still a million Héraultais who will take the plane to Marseille, and nearly 300,000 to Toulouse and Barcelona, regrets Emmanuel Brehmer. It is this potential that we absolutely must capture. To continue its development, the airport is counting in particular on the future arrival of a new airline base, in addition to that of Transavia. With, of course, new destinations. The objective for the airport is to reach 2.5 million passengers “as quickly as possible”, notes its president.
