In the Gironde, in the Gorges du Verdon, in the Drôme, in the Côte d’Azur and even in Franche-Comté, the drought is there. Everywhere. For months. The situation worsens day by day and harms local producers.
The year 2022 could be the driest since 1959, according to Météo France. The cause: temperatures above normal for the season and insufficient rainfall to recharge groundwater and rivers.
In the Maritime Alps, the prefecture has placed five river basins in the drought crisis stage. The fourteen municipalities of the Côte d’Azur that were in the “reinforced alert” phase at the beginning of summer entered the red on July 28. Therefore, the prefecture has enacted new water restriction measures.
An unprecedented situation. Worrying for many local growers who are seeing their yields decline due to global warming. And they fear that this summer’s drought heralds a new storm Alex in the fall.
