In four years their number has increased tenfold. In 2021, there were 4,070 remote work contracts between companies, up from 390 in 2017, according to research by Dares released on Wednesday.
In particular, the Covid-19 crisis has forced many companies to reorganize their mode of operation in line with employee expectations: 56% of agreements were signed in 2020. This “leads to the spread of this way of working to new business. profiles such as small structures. Those with ingrained negotiating habits are nevertheless largely in the majority,” notes the Department of Statistics of the Ministry of Labor.

The study notes that new professional sectors have also introduced remote work. Thus, in 2021, the number of contracts signed by trade, transport and hotel enterprises reached 620, an increase of 225% compared to 2019. This is partly due to the fact that companies in the sector had already established telecommuting systems even before the health crisis.
71% of agreements relate to “normal” remote work
Dares also studied the content of the signed agreements. Out of a sample of 151 treaties analyzed, 51% of them provide, for example, a text for a fixed period, averaging 21 months. A reversibility clause also exists in two-thirds of cases to allow the company to reconsider its choice, or even an adaptation period (54% of agreements), a kind of testing phase to evaluate the system put in place.

71% of agreements target “normal” remote work, with the two-day-a-week formula appearing to make up the majority. A significant number of agreements combine fixed and flexible days with, for example, establishing two flexible teleworking days per week with no teleworking on Mondays and Fridays. Other agreements propose a mix of fixed and flexible days, such as one fixed day per week and an annual volume of 20 flexible days per year, the study elaborates.
Finally, the provision of equipment, such as a laptop, is covered in 8 out of 10 agreements, while telecommuting costs are covered in less than half of the cases. Reminders of the right to disconnect and health and safety obligations to employees are frequent, but few agreements include specific systems to prevent remote work, Dares notes.
