The state wants to do everything to avoid the disaster of the previous season. In the weeks before the end of the New Year holidays, he will provoke a drop in poultry production in the west with early departures to the slaughterhouse so that bird flu does not get out of control.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, there are many farms in the area in question, located between the Vendée and Deux-Sèvres, and some flowing into Maine and the Loire. As of Monday, turkeys and ducks are “the most sensitive species (to the virus) at the present time” – will be sent to the slaughterhouse in advance, without replacement on the farms.
As for breeders of chickens and laying hens, they will be able to enter the end of their production cycle, but they will have to wait three weeks before re-introducing the animals to their premises.
Avoid seeing this infected poultry
These measures, taken in the context of the “acceleration” of infection, will be reviewed within three weeks. On Friday, the ministry was unable to count the number of relevant farms and animals. The aim of the measure is to forcibly reduce the number of poultry on farms, rather than risk them being infected, euthanized and therefore lost for human consumption.
The authorities want to avoid saturation of killing capacity, which was exceeded at the height of the last wave (end of November 2021 – mid-May 2022). On an unprecedented scale, this has resulted in the euthanasia of more than 20 million poultry and state compensation in excess of one billion euros.
According to the latest assessment, 91 farms, including 37 in the Vendée and Deux-Sèvres, have been infected since the early resurgence of the epizootic this summer. And nearly 1.3 million poultry have been euthanized.
