The unit, occupied by two agents, was carrying out patrol work when it was attacked, surrounded and set on fire by presumed protesters. A police officer was seriously injured in the head and other parts of the body.

His partner, Second Class Petty Officer José Luis Soncco Quispe, did not have the same fate and his charred body was found next to his service unit.

According to data from the Ombudsman’s Office, since the social protests against the government of Dina Boluarte began in December, 49 people have died (48 civilians and one police officer) and more than 660 have been injured in clashes between citizens and law enforcement.

In this regard, the president offered a message to the nation on Friday, January 13, in which she apologized to the country for the deaths in the protests and said that she will accept the investigations of the Public Ministry.
