A “minor problem” with a bank card caused payment difficulties across France on Thursday morning.

Many shoppers had an unpleasant surprise at the checkout this Thursday morning in various stores across the country: it was impossible to pay by credit card. A representative of the Group of Economic Interests (GIE) of bank cards, which determines the valid payment methods for this means, specified to Le Parisien that there had been a “small problem” with the “service provider” at the national level this morning.

“The incident, which lasted less than 30 minutes, was resolved at 10:45 a.m. “It was a minor issue with the service provider that had virtually no impact on customers,” she said.

Two Le Parisien journalists noted that on Thursday morning, payment terminals were unavailable in two stores, one in Paris and one in Seine-et-Marne, forcing shoppers in the latter case to abandon their purchases in order to be able to pay.

The problem has actually spread across the country. On the X network, several internet users expressed their regret over the morning incident. “I’m shopping for my client and he just said in the store: Due to a network outage, we are unable to accept credit card payments.“But, damn it,” one of them worried.

Another reported that “there was a problem with the payment by credit card this morning, Carrefour could not accept it, several brands are in the same situation.” A third customer also mentioned that “there is no longer the possibility of paying by credit card” at Leroy Merlin in Strasbourg. “Should we be afraid of a hack of our bank details, our bank accounts? “, asked another Internet user. The fears were therefore dismissed by the Central Bank of GIE, which only mentioned a “minor problem.”

Similar disruptions occurred in October 2023, when a technical incident at Worldline, a global leader in “money solutions providers,” made payments impossible at several brands of large groups such as Carrefour, McDonald’s, and even SNCF. The GIE Central Bank explained to Le Parisien at the time that it was not “a cyberattack or a problem with the bank card payment network.”
