Sharp drop in the number of people registered with Pôle Emploi in category A in October

-

The number of unemployed (registered in category A) recorded a sharp drop of 3.3% in October, or 113,500 registered less, to 3.377 million, according to figures from the Ministry of Labor released Thursday.

Including reduced activity (categories B and C), the number of job seekers in France (excluding Mayotte) was down 1.6% in October compared to the previous month (-93,300 people) and stood at to 5.709 million, according to the Statistics Directorate (Dares). This number drops below the pre-crisis level of December 2019 (5.726 million).

Categories B and C on the rise

The Minister of Labor, Elisabeth Borne, immediately greeted these figures on Twitter: “113,000 job seekers with no less activity in October, it is quite simply unprecedented! Our economy is dynamic, creates jobs and the 100 billion euros of #FranceRelance are bearing fruit! She said.

While the number of job seekers in category A (no activity) drops sharply, those in category B and C (partial activity) increased by 0.9% (+20,300) over one month. Over one year, the drop in category A is 10.9% (-412,900). For categories A, B and C, it is -4.9% (-296,200).

The Dares does not comment on the monthly data, which is too volatile, favoring quarterly developments. The latest quarterly results published at the end of October showed a drop in the number of category A unemployed by 5.5% in the third quarter.

Categories A were then just below the pre-crisis level, with 5,200 fewer job seekers compared to the 4th quarter of 2019. For categories A, B and C as a whole, it remained above its level d ‘pre-crisis (+124.100).
