Russell Crowe as the Pope’s Exorcist, if you’ve dreamed of it, know that Hollywood does it. The actor will play in a film with a very explicit title, since it will be called The Pope’s Exorcist. The Australian actor will play Father Gabriele Amorth, a priest who really existed and performed no less than 100,000 exorcisms during his career for the Vatican.
The film (horror, it goes without saying) will be based on the two autobiographies of this man with an exceptional destiny, who died at the age of 91 in 2016. Behind the camera, we will find Julius Avery, director ofOverlord.
The filmmaker seems particularly excited at the idea of working with the hero of Gladiator. “It was one of my goals to work with Russell. Collaborate with him on the incredible Pope’s Exorcist is truly a dream come true,” he said in a statement relayed by The Hollywood Reporter.
For the moment, the project is only in pre-production, but the Screen Gems studio, which is behind the film, hopes to be able to start filming next September in Ireland.
Russell Crowe hasn’t commented on the news but he seems enthusiastic enough about the project to have shared his casting announcement on Twitter !
