“Te de tías”: our review of the work written by Anahí de Cárdenas

It’s true that after seeing “Te de tías” you can’t stop singing. Or hum Or whistle Thus it can be explained that the musical comedy written by Anahi de Cardenas and directed by Atilio Quesada Oré, is about to conclude its fifth season, this time in the theater Ricardo Palma of Miraflores.

The story kindly happens in a karaoke, perfect excuse to listen “Things of love” (Ana Gabriel and Vikki Carr) or “Electricity” (bright Star), and a resource that bears fruit. From minute 10, the audience is captivated: it is impossible not to complete the lyrics of “A 1000 x hora” (Lynda) in your mind or laugh at choices like “Rebelde” by RBD. At first the equalization bothered, but it was fixed or the ears got used to it.

In almost an hour and a half, “Te de tías” shows the meeting of four school friends who are around 35 years old. The scenery – a couple of armchairs, a small central table and a screen behind it – is enough. The dramaturgy is not complicated either and repeats a successful formula: matching opposite personalities in the same space is the ideal catalyst to bring out their differences. De Cárdenas uses this to enhance a comedy whose dramatic arc is limping and whose outcome needs more work. The end feels rushed, so much so that the changes in the characters are resolved with an ellipsis -they fight, leave the scene and, when they return, quickly reach the solution of the conflict- that leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It is necessary to work more on the process to reach anagnorisis.

It is worth putting the magnifying glass on comic resources. The jokes are handled in the code of exaggeration and are the same as always, and, even so, they cause laughter. The vital thing about these gags is the prelude. And in that logic, what the cast achieves is extraordinary. Gina Yangali it’s Victoria, who constantly plays with her rings and is ready to have fun even though she doesn’t always have a good time; Laly Guimarey she transforms into Kiara, a talented, egotistical actress with anger issues who constantly shakes her fan; Natalia Salas It is Lisa, cucufata in love with God and Pope Francis who, at the slightest hint of sin, bathes in alcohol. The group completes Anahi de Cardenas like Marcela, the most enigmatic. She has the responsibility of leading the dramatic action, but perhaps in her self-absorption the need for more work on the script is hidden: the text does not support that it takes her almost an hour to tell that she is moving to another country. Despite this, her interpretation fits well with those of Yangali, Guimarey and Salas. The chemistry of the cast is remarkable, so strong that, when adding references to the national situation, all the inconveniences -such as their positions on stage not always coinciding with the illuminated areas- are left aside. The best proof: when one of them dropped the microphone, another came to her rescue with an apparently improvised joke and the stumble was forgotten.

That the staging develops as a musical allows them to shine their talents. His ability to sustain so many songs with almost no vocal errors and body work -on which the exaggerated comedy is developed- make “Te de tías” a powerful and recommendable work.
