“I don’t want to be just another pretty girl”: Emilia Mernes and her relationship with fans and her desire to come to Peru

The Argentine singer Emilia Mernes never had anything served on a tray. However, by betting on her own talent and perseverance to stand out in an industry that still has many obstacles for women artists, at the age of 26 she has become one of the new female faces of Latin music, leading a tour of all of Latin America that will culminate in Peru on May 5, 2023 (the original date was in November 2022, but it has been rescheduled).

Mernes was born in the town of Nogoyá, in Entre Ríos (Argentina). Her vocation for her music was present to her from a very young age, since she sang and composed songs with the guitar that her grandfather gave her. “I come from a very small city, so I felt conditioned to a destination because of where I was from; I was frustrated by the fact that I couldn’t dream of being an artist. In the end, I was able to prove that this is not the case. My story serves many of my fans who want to shine in any field”says the artist.

The interpreter of singles like “Cuatro twenty”, “Esto just empieza” and “BB”, knows very well that any opportunity can be seized to fulfill dreams. Well, in 2016 the artist joined the Uruguayan band Rombai, after sending a video singing to the leader of the group when they were looking for a new female voice. From this union came songs like “Cuando ella se ponte a bailar” and “Una y otra vez”, hits from the group that made Emilia’s career grow by leaps and bounds.

However, as of 2018, Mernes decided to focus on his solo career, consolidating himself with a pop musical style. “From a very young age, my musical references were Rihanna, Beyoncé, Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani. All of them have had a cultural impact on me, and that is reflected in my songs, as the inspiration they generated in me.”, add. Later, the singer decided to start taking a few steps towards a mix of reggaeton, trap and hip hop, getting out of her comfort zone a bit.

It is thanks to this jump that his debut album “Do you believe in me?”, released earlier this year; This contains famous singles such as “Intoxicao”, along with his compatriot Nicki Nicole, and “Rápido lento”, by Tiago PZK. The album was ranked at number 4 on Spotify’s Top Global Debut Albums, at number 3 on the Top Albums Argentina and at number 2 on Billboard Argentina’s Hot 100. His most recent tour has been named after his latest album, and after meeting dates in Argentina, he continues his route to culminate in our country.

“It will be my first time in Peru, so I am dying to eat ceviche and meet my fans, of course. I know that there are many who have been following me for a long time, because they have had very nice gestures with me from a distance, they even celebrated my birthday with a cake. So I am very grateful for the love and affection that they give me every day.”Explain.

In the concert in our country, as well as in the rest of Latin America, their most famous singles cannot be missing, which were worked from head to toe by Emilia herself. And it is that, she would like to transcend by earning the respect of the industry. “It is very difficult not to gain prejudices when one is starting, I do not want to be “a pretty girl” anymore, because it is not like that. I get involved in the direction of my videos, in the concept of the songs, in the live shows, in the musical arrangements, in the visual arts. The truth is that I would like to be remembered as a true artist”add.

Precisely, since there are still several stereotypes towards women in this artistic field, female sisterhood is one of the alternatives that exists among the rest of the Argentine artists; who, like Emilia, also talk about female empowerment in their songs. “There are more and more of us, and we are always happy for the success of the other. It fills my heart a lot to see that the girls are doing well, despite the fact that sometimes gossip is responsible for comparing us and inventing stories. But for us it is simply satisfying that we get ahead and that Argentina is recognized on the international scene”concludes Mernes.
