Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro offered this Saturday to cover the cost of the Ariel Awards statuettes after the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (AMACC) announced that the 2023 edition will not be held because the organization is going through a serious financial crisis.
“To find solutions and maintain the Arieles for those who make a cinema that proposes and gives presence to Mexico: I personally offer to cover the entire cost of the Ariel figurines”, the filmmaker wrote on Twitter. In addition, he requested a dialogue between the Academy and the Secretary of Culture, Alejandra Frausto.
“I enter it. I have been calling Leticia Huijara -president of the AMACC- and I follow her so that she can give me a DM. I join. I don’t rest anyone. Solutions have to be found. Guilt doesn’t work. Solutions help. Go for it”Del Toro finished.
Shortly after, Frausto responded to his tweets saying that on the part of the Government of Mexico, dialogue is always and will be open. “The Ministry of Culture of Mexico is totally willing for the Arieles to continue,” he established.
Finally, Del Toro invited Mexicans to reflect on the quality cinema that is being made in Mexico.
“There are new and strong voices in Mexican cinema. Those voices are trapped and the Arieles, the academy and the festivals keep them alive and urgent. If the cost of an identity seems high to you, you cannot imagine the cost of not having it”sentenced.
Del Toro is one of the defenders of Mexican cinema and, from his prestige and international recognition for films such as “The Shape of Water” (2017) or “El laberinto del Fauno” (2006), there are many signs of support that he has given to his colleagues who make movies in Mexico.
