Spain offered the city of Cádiz as a shared venue to Arequipa (Peru) to celebrate the IX International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE), scheduled for the end of March of next year, given the situation in the Andean country, sources from the organization reported.

The decision on holding the congress, which is scheduled to take place from March 27 to 30, 2023, will be made in the coming days, the sources indicated, who recalled that it is Peru who convenes and organizes this event, which they were expected to attend. more than 250 international lecturers and speakers.

According to sources from the Royal Academy of the Language (RAE), the director and president of the Association of Spanish Language Academies (ASALE), Santiago Muñoz Machado, is in contact with these academies to study the matter, which will also be dealt with. in an extraordinary plenary session that will be held tomorrow by the Spanish Royal Academy.

At least 26 people have died in Peru in recent days, since the beginning of the demonstrations demanding the resignation of the president, Dina Boluarte, and an early election, after the failed coup d’état by Pedro Castillo on December 7, that ended with his dismissal as president of the country.

Santiago Muñoz Machado affirmed yesterday that the congress was going ahead except in circumstances of “political instability” and pointed out that the program was done, although he acknowledged that until March “We don’t know what can happen”.

“In principle there is no decision, Peru itself or ASALE could decide not to celebrate it with the Instituto Cervantes to make an agreement” in this regard, the director of the RAE said yesterday.
