“Michael”: what is known about the biopic of the king of pop

The director of “Bohemian Rhapsody: The Freddie Mercury Story”, Antoine Fuqua, will take charge of the Michael Jackson biopic. For this, the pop star’s family gave their approval to Lionsgate, which announced the production last year, a bundle up its sleeve to capture the fan audience of the much-loved and questioned musical star.

The biopic director is coming from achievements like “Emancipation,” the Apple TV+ drama starring Will Smith. In addition, he has the experience of having told the life of a star. The proof of this is “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the award-winning film by Fuqua that brought an Oscar Award to the actor Rami Malek, Freddie Mercury in fiction.

With Fuqua at the head of the film and a character like Michael Jackson, the public begins to form expectations of what they would see about the artist’s memory. But his producer, Graham King, who obtained the rights to the singer’s life, isn’t interested in doing a clean interpretation of the original story, Deadline reported in an exclusive article.

According to the American media, the film addresses Jackson’s outstanding career from his beginnings in “The Jackson 5” to his life as an adult singer. Of course, the pedophilia scandal will also have a place in the script, since it is an event that occurred during the last moments of the star until his death at age 50.

The script is written by playwright John Logan and produced by Graham King, who also adapted the life of Freddie Mercury for the big screen. The work of the team starts at the end of 2023.

“I am very excited to have Lionsgate be a part of this epic film,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group producer Joe Drake said in a press release. “And excited to be working with Graham King, who has proven success in telling iconic life stories, from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to ‘Ali’; When he is paired with John Logan, we couldn’t be in more extraordinary hands.”

Streaming announcement dates are given late in production or after the release of the films. For now, the writers of “Michael” are still thinking about the story.

On the other hand, in 2021, Fuqua reaffirmed his collaboration with Netflix to tell stories with the platform’s seal, although they had already collaborated together in the past to release the film starring Jake Gyllenhaal, “The Guilty”. However, a union of forces for the premiere of “Michael” is unlikely, since the rights are in charge of another production company.

In addition, it is known that Lionsgate has a streaming subcategory on Star+ that has not yet reached Latin America. Many of his movies are on Disney+. So later it will be known what plans exist for “Michael” on the platforms.
