Our family history is preserved in many ways, and while the digital age makes it possible to record (and review) immediate moments in our lives, it is the printed photographs we keep in our homes that preserve those moments that make up who we are.
The value of an image is appreciated more with the passing of the years, the same ones that can also deteriorate our family treasures. That is why Casiopea, an initiative of the journalist Lilia Córdova, will give a workshop that will provide participants with access to basic image conservation tools that can be applied at home.
Córdova has more than 20 years of experience in photographic archive management. She was part of the historical archive team of the newspaper El Comercio, but her connection with the family archives stems from her concern to organize the photographs of her maternal grandmother, who was the creator and custodian of the visual memory of her family.
For this reason, the journalist is interested in teaching how family photographs can be preserved with accessible materials. Along these lines, she has created Casiopea, a personal venture where she designs handmade photo albums and teaches workshops on photo conservation.
The new Casiopea workshop will be held on Saturday, January 21 and 28, from 10:00 am to 02:00 pm at CC Caminos del Inca 2nd Stage. Store 348, Groove. The sessions will be divided as follows:
SESSION 1:
- What do we keep at home?
- First conservation actions
- What is a photograph made of?
- How to manipulate your photographs
- Surface cleaning of photographs and albums
SESSION 2:
- Storage: paper vs. plastic
- Recommendations for materials and how to make guards to protect your photographs
- Organization
- Importance of taking an inventory
- Let’s tell our family history
The price of the workshop is S/.320. Includes materials. You can request more information for registrations on Casiopea’s profile on Instagram.
