It’s over for Phoebe Waller-Bridge on the series Mr and Mrs Smith. The screenwriter and star of Fleabag in fact left the project after artistic disputes with producer Donald Glover, who was to play opposite her in the lead role. Variety says, however, that the two actors, who have known each other since the filming of the spin-off of Star Wars Solo, remained on good terms.
The project was only in its infancy, however, as it was due to go into production at Amazon next year only. There are therefore several months to find a replacement for the British star.
Arm wrestling lost
Based on the eponymous 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Mr et Mrs Smith was to resume the original plot, the story of a couple of assassins who are hired to kill each other. It was Donald Glover himself who had the idea of this remake in the form of a series. Variety does not specify on which element of the series these “artistic differences” arose, but it was obvious that the actor would prevail if a standoff there should be, being the producer of the series.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is not, however, likely to be bored since she already has two projects in the works, Indiana Jones 5, as well as the ultimate season of Killing Eve, of which she is an executive producer. The star also worked on the very upcoming James Bond, Die can wait, the last with Daniel Craig, for which she was recruited as a screenwriter after filming began. The film is due out on October 6.
