Peruvian film ‘Diogenes’ won two awards at the Malaga Festival

National proud! Leonardo Barbuy La Torre was in charge of writing, directing and scoring the Peruvian film ‘Diógenes’, which won the award for Best Ibero-American Film in the Zonazine section of the Malaga Festival, in Spain.

But that’s not all, because the Peruvian director also received the Silver Biznaga for Best Director in this film event.

“Our film begins its journey this year, seeking to approach sensitive and permeable gazes and listeners, seeking to generate a reflective space from the fringes of violence and how we position ourselves in front of them, both in relation to our memory and our commitment. ”, Barbuy La Torre said in a press release.

What is Diogenes about?

The story of diogenes It places us in the Peruvian Andes, where two brothers are raised in the purest isolation by their father, a painter from Tablas de Sarhua, who exchanges his art in town for provisions, while his children wait for him, cared for by their dogs.

One morning, Diogenes does not wake up. Sabina and Santiago live for three days with the corpse of his father, longing for him to open his eyes. After acknowledging his death, they will go in search of his past. This film is a co-production between Peru (Mosaico), France (Dublin Films) and Colombia (La Selva Cine).

As revealed, this film was filmed during 2021 in Sarhua and is performed entirely by natural actors cast in the same community, after a long process that included consultation with all instances of local authority (district mayor’s office, community board of directors and varayoc mayors) to obtain their permission to carry out the filming.

Who act in Diogenes?

The master painter of Tablas de Sarhua, Jorge Pomacanchariand children Gisela Yupa and CleinerYupawho during filming were 11 and 6 years old respectively.
