Cannes Film Festival could screen new films by Woody Allen and Roman Polanski

The director of the cannes film festivalThierry Frémaux, said that, if the new films by the controversial directors are finished Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, would evaluate the possibility of exhibiting them during the festival.

“I don’t think the Roman Polanski movie is ready for Cannes. Maybe the Woody Allen movie is. We will position ourselves on this depending on the situation.”assured this Monday the director of the renowned film festival to the specialized magazine Variety.

Both directors have been accused of sexually abusing girls decades ago. On several occasions Polanski was accused of having sexual relations with several minors and of having fled from US justice in France, while Allen has received accusations from her adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow of sexually abusing her when she was seven years old.

Frémaux also denied rumors that the short film “Strange way of life”, by Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, will be the film that opens the event that will take place from May 16 to 23, but assured that it will be part of the program.

“He won’t be on opening night. It’s a rumour, but I like rumours, they are part of the Cannes mythology.” said the manager. The 30-minute film is a western about homosexuality starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, in which two gunmen become lovers.

The Spaniard had been part of Cannes before, first in 1999 with his film “All about my mother”, with which he won the award for best direction, in 2006 with “Volver”, which made him the winner of the award for best screenplay, and in 2017 he was president of the jury.

Frémaux confessed that one of his priorities is to get American director Martin Scorsese to return to Cannes with his latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The last time the director of “Taxi Driver” presented a film at the festival was in 1986 with the black humor satire “After Hours”.

The new film, which was originally going to see the light of day in 2022, is the adaptation of David Grann’s book of the same name, which follows the serial murders of native Osage tribesmen in the fight for oil during the 1920s and stars its two big stars, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Another of the films that the director hopes to have on the program this year is “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, the film in which actor Harrison Ford reprized the role of the popular and intrepid archaeologist at the age of 80.
