“Eternals” on Disney Plus: a basic guide to understanding the new Marvel Studios film

-

The Marvel movie “Eternals”Is now available in streaming. And there are reasons to see it. Not only does it have the address of the Oscar winner Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), but also with a cast full of stars in which it stands out Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, and Kit Harington, among many others.

In preparation for the film’s arrival at Disney Plus, one of the first in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we prepared this basic guide to everything you need to know about the film.

Recently series like “Loki” and “What If …?” They’ve explored the multiverse the MCU sits within, showing us variants of known heroes in alternate timelines. Less explored is the past of this universe, a void that the “Eternals” fill.

These characters were created by the legendary artist Jack Kirby, who also worked on characters like Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Hulk. Fascinated by mythology, Kirby set out to create a team that mixed science fiction, ancient myths and superheroes, a formula that he had already tried before in DC with the New Gods.

The result is the Eternals, a variation of humanity with superpowers and longevity thanks to the experiments of the almost omnipotent extraterrestrial race Celestials, who commissioned them to protect and guide humanity, which has mistaken them for various gods throughout their history. His most frequent enemies are the Deviants, the failed and monstrous experiments of the Celestials that have given rise to most of the mythological beasts.

In the case of his film versions, these change slightly to turn them into aliens from the planet Olympia, who were commissioned by the Celestials to protect humanity. As they have already advanced, The group came to Earth 7,000 years ago and has been protecting humanity for much of its history. The mythological aspect of the Eternals has already been highlighted by Zhao herself.

We’re excited for audiences to embark on this epic journey through time and space with a group of immortal heroes. We hope you have a blast, fall in love with these wonderful characters, learn new MCU mythologies, and explore some of the existential questions humanity has asked itself since the beginning of time.“, he pointed.

Perhaps as impressive as the superheroes is the cast they managed to assemble for the film. In addition to the aforementioned actors like Jolie, Harington, Hayek, and Madden, the cast also includes actors like Kumail Nanjiani, Barry Keoghan, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lee Dong-seok, Gemma Chan, and Lauren Ridloff.

Ridloff’s inclusion is particularly striking, as in her role as Makkari the 43-year-old actress has become the first deaf superhero in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also breaks barriers Tyree Henry, whose character Phastos is portrayed as a gay man with a husband – played by actor Haaz Sleiman – and a son, a prominent role that gives Marvel Studios and Disney the representation that the LGBT + community has claimed for years. .

The truth is that inclusivity and representation have become one of the themes that the actors have wanted to highlight when promoting the film, with actors of Pakistani, Arab, Mexican, Korean, Irish, African American and other ancestry in their cast. as well as a Chinese-born director. This has also been extended to the characters, some of whom have changed their sex in front of their version of the comic strips to put the members of the group on parity.

Hope this starts to normalize what should have been from the beginningJolie told Reuters during the film’s premiere. “I hope that people will see these movies in the years to come and that we don’t even think about how diverse they are, but rather that they become what is normal and what is right, and what is an adequate representation of the world we live in.”.

I may be the first, but I won’t be the only one for long”Ridloff said at another time, using American sign language. “There’s another deaf superhero coming to the MCU very soon, so this is definitely a game changer.”.

The concept of inclusion is further developed in the Uni-Mind, a power that the Eternals can use to amplify the power of one of their members if they stick together.

Here is the list of the Eternals, their actors and their powers:

Sersi (Gemma Chan): the Eternal with the greatest connection to humanity. His power is the transformation of matter. Sersi has had a relationship for millennia with Ikaris.

Ikaris (Richard Madden): described as a soldier who puts the mission above everything. Not only does he feature super strength and the ability to fly, but he can also shoot powerful lightning bolts from his eyes.

Ajak (Salma Hayek): the matriarch and spiritual leader of the group. Appropriately, his power lies not only in being able to communicate across distance with his companions, but also in being able to heal them.

Thena (Angelina Jolie)– An Eternal finding her place on the battlefield, Thena has the power to manipulate cosmic energy to create different types of weapons. He has a long relationship of friendship and fellowship with Gilgamesh.

Druig (Barry Keoghan): intense and thoughtful, this Eternal has the power to control the minds of others, a capacity that he has used during his long stay on Earth to direct humanity.

Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani)While the Eternals chose to hide from humanity, Kingo chose to do so in the most showy way, by becoming a famous movie actor. His power is to shoot powerful lightning bolts from his hands.

Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry)– In a universe populated by guys like Tony Stark, Phastos can boast of being one of the most intelligent beings in the universe. His power allows him to control technology and he is a master inventor.

Gilgamesh (Don Lee): Kind and laid-back, this Eternal possesses the greatest physical strength of his peers, which is amplified by his cosmic power. He maintains a deep friendship with Thena.

Makkari (Lauren Ridloff): speed is the gift and curse of Makkari, who thanks to speed and his longevity has managed to travel all corners of the Earth repeatedly.

Sprite (Lia McHugh): an Eternal perpetually trapped in the body of a 12-year-old girl, a situation that has caused her some frustration and resentment. Its power is to create illusions.

In addition to the Eternals, Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman, a museum curator who in the comics is the civilian identity of the superhero Black Knight. Respected Hindu actor Harish Patel plays Karun, Kingo’s assistant and friend.

With 26 films and several series in its catalog, the timeline of the MCU films can be somewhat confusing.

Happily in the case of “Eternals”, its producer Nate Moore has clarified its chronological place by noting that the events occur “almost at the same time as ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, with the world recovering from the attack of Thanos and the return of half the population. ‘ This means that the events of “Eternals” occur in mid-2024.

Cameo de Harry Styles:

Marvel has always reserved post-credit scenes in their movies for big reveals, and “Eternals” will be no exception. The film will have a cameo from Harry Styles. But this will not be a common role, since the singer-turned-actor would be playing Eros, a name that in the comics belongs to Thanos’s brother.
