Traveling to Kigali on Thursday, Emmanuel Macron acknowledged France’s responsibility for the genocide in Rwanda, which left more than 800,000 victims, mainly Tutsi, killed between April and July 1994.

“I have come to recognize our responsibilities,” declared the French president after a speech at the 1994 Genocide Memorial in Kigali. France has made “silence prevail over the examination of the truth for too long,” he added.

The French president went to Rwanda for a two-day visit intended to finalize the reconciliation between the two countries, after more than 25 years of tensions related to the role played by France in this tragedy.
