This is the biggest settlement of American history for a person killed by the police. George Floyd’s family will receive $ 27 million in damages after reaching an agreement with the city of Minneapolis, lawyers for the family said on Friday.
“This amicable settlement is the most important in the history of the United States in a fundamental rights case brought for a death attributable to a fault,” they explained in a statement.
Verdict by the end of April for Derek Chauvin
George Floyd’s family had filed a civil complaint in June 2020 against the municipality and the four police officers involved in his death. Derek Chauvin’s criminal trial opened this week with jury selection, with the hearing set for March 29. The officer, who pressed his knee to George Floyd’s neck for almost 8 minutes, was charged with three charges ranging from manslaughter to murder. The verdict is expected by the end of April.
