Exposure to the sun’s rays causes most wrinkles and age spots on the face. Many people think that a glowing complexion means good health, but the skin color you get from being in the sun can actually accelerate the effects of aging and increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

This exposure causes most of the skin changes that we consider to be a normal part of aging. Over time, ultraviolet (UV) light from the Sun damages fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers break down, after stretching. So while sun damage to your skin may not be apparent when you’re young, it will definitely show up later in life. The sun can also cause problems with your eyes, eyelids, and the skin around your eyes.

For this reason, the specialists at the Cleveland Clinic share with us seven tips to help prevent sun damage to our skin.

  • Stop smoking. People who smoke tend to have more wrinkles than non-smokers of the same age. The reason for this difference is not clear. It may be because smoking interferes with normal blood flow to the skin.
  • apply sunscreen. with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more. This should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure and then every two to three hours thereafter. Reapply sooner if you get wet or sweat a lot.
  • Use of suitable products. Select cosmetic products, contact lenses or glasses that offer UV protection.
  • Sun exposure. Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible during peak UV radiation hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Self exams. Perform regular skin self-exams to become familiar with existing growths and to note any changes or new growths.
  • Personal care. Relieve dry skin by using a moisturizing lotion and bathing with soap less often (use a moisturizing body wash instead).
  • Become a good role model. Promote skin cancer prevention habits in children and adolescents. 80% of a person’s lifetime sun exposure is acquired before the age of 18.

When should I call a doctor about sun damage?

If you notice any changes in your skin that worry you, contact your doctor right away. It is important to carry out regular skin checks to detect new spots or changes in existing lesions. It is also important to have regular eye exams. Contact your doctor if you have vision changes.
