Microsoft chose Uruguay to launch its first AI lab in Latin America

the multinational microsoft will install its first laboratory in Uruguay artificial intelligence and the internet of things in Latin America, which he hopes to turn into a “conduit” for more businesses in the area to “flourish” abroad.

As announced this Thursday at a press conference by the general manager of Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies of the Microsoft Lab, Rashmi Misra, it is expected that the center, which will be installed in the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU), in Montevideo, will be able to promote at least 300 projects in three years.

The lab is the third of its kind to be built by the tech giant outside the United States. Until now there were only in Shanghai and Munich.

Asked why Uruguay was chosen, Misra said that the company is usually very cautious when choosing places to increase its network. “We are reluctant to do it until we find the right environment”, he said and explained that they were excited about Uruguay “that the government has taken steps to map the path for all children leaving school, so that they are familiar with technology and innovation from a very young age and that generates a flow towards universities”.

The basis for innovation is already”, he pointed out and maintained: “This is a great place to create our next lab”.

Misra, who emphasized that what most caught the attention of Uruguay to the company founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen 47 years ago was the boost that Plan Ceibal -created in 2007 in Uruguay under the model “One computer per child ” by Nicholas Negroponte- generated in young people who today innovate from their own companies.
