A booster with the American Pfizer vaccine against the coronavirus increased the level of antibodies up to 20 times in people immunized with the complete scheme of the Chinese Coronavac, according to preliminary results of a study carried out in Uruguay, where 24% of the population already received three dose against COVID-19.

Since the beginning of March, scientists from the Institut Pasteur (IP) of Montevideo and the University of the Republic (Udelar) carry out a research project to study the in relation to the vaccines and doses administered.

The study, which involves more than 200 volunteers, will last two years and plans to carry out periodic blood draws from the participants.

A first subgroup of 57 people who had already received three doses against COVID-19 had their blood drawn four times: before being vaccinated, at 18 days and then an average of 80 days after receiving the second dose of Coronavac, and

In the first sampling, none of the participants showed specific antibodies against SARS CoV2, something to be expected since none had contracted the virus.

In the second, 100% showed the presence of specific antiviral antibodies, but with variable levels.

After the third extraction, it was found with respect to the levels found in the second sampling.

And finally, after the third dose, it was found that all the participants had a target found in the second sampling.

“They are preliminary results, in a particular population”, clarified this Friday in a press conference Sergio Bianchi, investigator of the IP.

Scientists will continue to monitor for how long antiviral antibody levels will be maintained after vaccination. They also hope to increase the number of participants analyzed.

The country of 3.5 million inhabitants has 72% of its population vaccinated with the complete Coronavac, Pfizer or Astrazeneca scheme, while 24% have already received a third booster dose.
