Humans can live to be at least 130 years old, study finds

Humans can probably live to be at least 130 years old, or even much longer in theory, although the chances of reaching such an old age are slim, according to a new study.

The age limit of the human being has been widely debated and recent studies have indicated that life or even that there is no age limit in the theoretical framework.

New research, published Wednesday in the Royal Society journal Open Science, enters the discussion with an analysis of new data from supercentenarians (110 years or older) and semi-supercentenarians (105 years or older).

While the risk of death generally increases with age, the analysis of these researchers shows that the risk eventually stagnates and remains at

“Starting at 110, one can consider living another year like flipping a coin”said Anthony Davison, a professor of statistics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, who led the study.

“If it comes out expensive, you will live your next birthday. If not, you will die sometime in the next year ”, he told AFP.

Based on the available data,

In fact, if these results are extrapolated, “Implies that there would be no limit to life expectancy” since he could always come up heads when tossing the coin, he concludes his investigation.

Their study is based on a database recently published by the International Longevity Database that covers more than 1,100 supercentennials from 13 countries and another from Italy with information on all persons in the country aged 105 years or older between 2009 and 2015.

“If there was a limit below 130 years, we would have been able to detect it with the data available now”, Davison indicated.

However, although in theory we can live beyond 130 years,

To begin with, the analysis is based on people who have already achieved the feat of exceeding one hundred years.

Even at 110, the chances of reaching 130 are “from (…) not impossible, but very unlikely ”, he pointed.

Anyway, he believes that before the end of this century, some human will have reached that age.

For now, the person who has lived the longest is French Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the confirmed age of 122.

Currently, the oldest verified person in the world is the Japanese Kane Tanaka, with 118 years.
