The microbiologist at the University Hospital of A Coruña and spokesperson for the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC), María del Mar Tomás, has explained that cases of simultaneous infection of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza, generically called flurone, do not They are “serious” and he maintains that “there is no increase in complications”, after cases were detected in Catalonia this Monday.

The expert, in statements to Europa Press,

This coinfection, he says, does not increase the risk of complications, although he has clarified that special attention should be paid to people who are not vaccinated against either virus, since the existence of both in an organism could lead to it. . Regarding its contagion rate, he added that, initially, there should not be a high transmission, although he reaffirmed that “Unvaccinated people should be alert.”

This co-infection, according to the professional, is common because the two viruses are found in the environment and can join together to form, what has been known as fluron. “The covid enters through the ACE2 receptor of the eukaryotic cell and the influenza virus enters through the receptors with sialic acid and if the two viruses meet, then ”, has explained. He has also pointed out that there has already been some occasion where cases of pediatric covid co-infected with other respiratory syncytial viruses have been detected.

In this sense, the symptomatology is similar to the Omicron variant but has stressed that it is not a new variant “or anything similar” and has underlined that, of all the reported cases of this coinfection (the first occurred in May 2020 , according to studies published in the medical journal ‘The Lancet’) “It has not been a bad prognosis.”

Likewise, it has predicted that there will be cases in people vaccinated with the booster dose of COVID-19 but not with the flu and has predicted that with the vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 “There will be less probability of detecting a case of fluron” because the covid virus lives less in the body.

“A person clears the SARS-CoV-2 virus in two or three days. It is eliminated quickly so it will be difficult for professionals to detect it. And in case of being vaccinated for both diseases,s”, has added.

The first cases of fluron

This weekend alarms sounded when Israel reported a case of flurone in an unvaccinated pregnant woman infected with both viruses. The patient, according to the Israeli Ministry of Health, had mild symptoms.

“The disease is the same. , since both attack the upper respiratory tract ”, explained Arnon Vizhnitser, director of the hospital’s gynecology department, according to the Israeli newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.

In the case of Spain, during the morning of this Monday, the director of the Catalan Health Service (CatSalut), Gemma Craywinckel, explained that cases of flurone have been detected in Catalonia but “sporadically”. In addition, he has added that the cases “They are not serious or different in approach.”

However, as María Tomás has confirmed to Europa Press, the first cases of coinfection by SARS-CoV-2 and the influenza flu virus were registered in 2021 in Galicia in two people who had both infections at the same time. A coinfection that, for the moment, insists María Tomás, “It seems to have no major complications.”
