More and more Belgians are crossing the French border not to go shopping or sightseeing but to benefit from a free PCR test. Compulsory for traveling for more than 48 hours outside Belgium, the PCR test costs a little more than 47 euros for our neighbors, says RTBF. In France, some centers are open seven days a week and without an appointment; an additional argument that hits the mark.
People who travel to be tested do not necessarily come from towns close to the border. “Word of mouth works in surprising proportions, since we have already received people from Brussels! », A nurse from the Leers (North) sample center told our colleagues.
Soon free tests in Belgium?
Unlike Belgium, in France, the tests are fully covered by Social Security. For foreigners, all they need to do is fill out the same papers as the French to also benefit from free admission. This is not without consequences for French social security.
The European Commission has planned to release 100 million euros to generalize free testing. “It is a fairly significant cost for Belgian finances if we have to pay for the tests of all the people who are going to travel. But we do not want to make a distinction between those who have had the opportunity to be vaccinated and the others ”, indicated to the Evening the Minister of the Interior, Annelies Verlinden.
