Italian head of government Mario Draghi assured Friday that his government was considering sanctions against health workers refusing to be vaccinated against Covid-19 and thus risking infecting their patients.

“The government intends to intervene. It is absolutely unacceptable that unvaccinated health personnel are in contact with sick people, that they are sent in contact with sick people, ”said Mario Draghi during a press conference. He was responding to a question concerning the case of patients infected with Covid-19 in Liguria, in northwestern Italy, by unvaccinated health personnel.

A decree in preparation?

Justice Minister Marta Cartabia “is preparing a measure on this subject, naturally its form and the application of sanctions are still to be seen,” he added. Returning to this argument a little later, he said he imagined that “this could be a decree” from the government.

The Minister of Health Roberto Speranza specified during the same press conference that the medical staff not vaccinated against the Covid-19 represents a “residual (…) very reduced” number.

On Thursday, the president of the Liguria region, Giovanni Toti had already called for a law against anti-vaccine health workers, two of the latter having infected at least 12 patients in two Ligurian hospitals.

“Given the need to protect citizens in sensitive moments, such as hospitalization, we may now have the legal and political conditions to take measures,” said Giovanni Toti, urging the government to provide “a clear regulatory framework On this subject in order to avoid “chaos in our hospitals”.

Italy has recorded more than 105,000 deaths from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
