A new massacre has occurred in Colombia. Nine people were shot dead on Monday in a rural area in the southwest of the country, the Defender’s Office said.
Armed men broke into a house in the municipality of Algeciras and “killed eight men and a woman,” the institution said on Twitter, without mentioning the motive or those responsible for the attack.

41 massacres since the start of the year
Seven people including two minors were killed in the same house last year, according to the NGO Indepaz. The independent observatory estimates at 41 the number of massacres – simultaneous assassination of at least three people according to the UN definition – committed in this country since the beginning of the year.
Dissidents hostile to the peace agreement signed by the FARC guerrillas in 2016, gangs and members of the ELN guerrillas compete for income from drug trafficking in southwest Colombia. The region is also shaken by violent social unrest which has left 59 people dead in one month across Colombia.
