Insulation
Insulation is always classified into one of two categories: down or synthetic . Down insulation is produced from goose plumage, which is renowned for its unbeatable warmth to weight ratio. Synthetics are synthetic fibers that mimic the insulating properties of down.
If you look at price alone, down coats are always more expensive. Since down is such a light and effective insulator, it is well worth it; however, make sure the down is from an ethical source . Many of the best winter coats on the market today are made from synthetic materials, especially those designed for physical activity or winter sports.
Weather resistance
Insulation and weather resistance are certainly the two most important criteria when choosing a winter coat. Lining
The inner lining of a coat refers to the side of the garment that sits directly on the skin. Usually, the inner lining is made of some kind of soft synthetic material. Some models even have a removable liner, which allows the user to remove it if it’s too hot, or even wear the liner on its own, without the outer shell.
Characteristics
There are several key features to consider when choosing a coat or parka.
Cap
Any good winter parka worthy of the name will have a hood. A hood lined with faux or real fur will keep high winds at bay. Many hood liners are detachable for convenience and styling. Some caps are constructed with a single wall; if possible, opt for a fully lined hood.
Cuffs
VELCRO cuffs are mostly found on the market, especially in higher quality parkas. These type of cuffs are fully adjustable and allow you to tighten them on your wrist or over your gloves, for example.
There are also press stud cuffs. While they are significantly more chic and elegant than VELCRO cuffs, they do not offer the same degree of fit.
Pockets
At a minimum, we recommend that you choose a parka with two hand pockets. Often, these are large enough to warm your hands in addition to holding a few essentials (like a little novel and a toque).
Another essential is an interior zippered pocket. You can safely store things like your phone there, which should be kept close to your body so as not to freeze. Finally, a chest pocket or two is a great place to stash your wallet.
Size and length
A winter coat should be a bit loose to allow you to wear several layers underneath. You should be able to pull up your zipper even if you are wearing a shirt, wool turtleneck, and baggy pants. A loose fit also creates more efficient thermal pockets.
If you try it in person, make sure you arrive well equipped for the most precise fit possible. If you’re still not sure, try this little test: raise your arms above your head. Do you feel constrained? Is your mobility reduced? Is the coat too high? If you answer yes to any of these questions, go for a size up.
When it comes to length, a parka is by definition longer than your regular winter coat. This is a huge advantage when walking for several hours in wind and snow; the extra length keeps hot air close to your body more effectively.
