Firefighter and hero of a football match… Who is the deputy Didier Lemaire?

Executives, liberal professions, few workers and… a firefighter. A professional fire soldier, Didier Lemaire was elected to the National Assembly on Sunday. After a first round where the representative of the Rassemblement National Christian Zimmermann had taken the advantage, he won quite easily in the 3rd constituency of Haut-Rhin with 53.91% of the vote.

This father of two, married to a nurse, 46, has been deputy to the small town of Altkirch where he was born since 2021, halfway between Mulhouse and the Swiss border. He is in charge of sports and security. In this constituency, where the LR Jean-Luc Reitzer, irremovable since 1988 and seven terms, had finally decided to hand over, the battle was close with the runner-up LR tipped, kept at a distance from the second round for some 500 votes, and 66% abstention.

Mr. Lemaire joined the UDI in 2014, before leaving it in 2020, uncomfortable with the party’s national agreement with LR, “which went too far to the extremes”. In 2021, he goes to Horizons, the party of Edouard Philippe, when it was created. The former Prime Minister had also come to support Didier Lemaire a few hours before the end of the official campaign for the first round.

Heroes of a football game

The new elected official, a tall dark man with a sporty appearance, wishes to invest in priority on the questions of health, safety and youth and education.

Unusual anecdote, Didier Lemaire had been elected “Alsatian of the week” at the beginning of 2017 by the newspaper L’Alsace for having saved the life of a footballer in his twenties who had a heart attack. Spectator of a match of his Altkirch team, he had jumped the handrail to rush to the player and give him cardiac massage for a quarter of an hour before the victim was taken care of by the Samu.
