The Constitutional Council canceled the election of two deputies

Eleonora Karua and Karim Ben Sheikh will no longer be deputies. The Constitutional Council canceled this Friday their June 2022 elections “due to glitches” during electronic voting, which are in addition to three ballots it invalidated in early December.

The Constitutional Council canceled the elections in the 2nd constituency of the French living outside France (Latin America), which was won in the second round by Eleonora Carua (Renaissance) with 57.42% of the vote against Nupes Cristian Rodriguez (42.58%). After two appeals, the body found that “at the start of the voting period, only 11% of phone messages containing passwords (in Argentina) were actually delivered to voters.”

“Although the relevant voters retained the right to vote at the ballot box by physically coming to one of the open polling stations (…), this malfunction could nevertheless (…) prevent several thousand voters from voting in the first round, he noted. Although it is in no way related to the elected candidate or other candidates, this circumstance should be considered, given the difference in votes between candidates, as undermining the sincerity of the vote. »

In the French 9th constituency outside France (Maghreb and West Africa), the Constitutional Council overturned the victory of Karim Ben Sheikh (Nupes), who won in the second round with 54.07% of the vote against 45.93% for former Minister Elisabeth Moreno (Renaissance) .

There, too, “the delivery rate to registered voters (…) of telephone messages containing passwords (…) was only 38% (for) voters registered on consular voter lists in Algeria,” the watchdog noted.

Other appeals denied

Regarding the 2nd constituency, he concluded that this “dysfunction” “probably (…) prevented several thousand voters from voting in the first round.” New elections are to be organized in these two constituencies within three months.

The Constitutional Council, on the other hand, rejected the appeals concerning the 8th arrondissement of the Seine and Marne, won by Hadrien Gomy (Renaissance) with 50.01% of the vote against Nupes Arnaud Bonnet (49.99%).

He did the same in the 5th arrondissement of the Loire where Renaissance Anthony Bross (50.02%) also narrowly defeated R.N. Valentin Manana (49.98%), as well as in the first French constituency created outside of France. Roland Lescure with 55.63% of the vote. He also confirmed the election of Michaele Seo, Renaissance MP for Wallis-et-Fortuna.

The body responsible for electoral disputes still has to rule on 11 other appeals, including that of former education minister Jean-Michel Blanquet in the 4th arrondissement of the Loire or the contested election of minister Clement Beaune (7th Paris).
