The “Popular Primary” passes the bar of 250,000 registered for the vote

Great success for the “Popular Primary”. The election at the initiative of independent activists to appoint a common left-wing candidate for the 2022 presidential election now has 250,000 registered voters. This figure reached on Monday is already the largest of the primaries that have taken place, exceeding the environmentalist primary in September (122,000) and the Republican Congress in early December (nearly 140,000).

This figure could still climb because registrations will close on January 23 at midnight. These voters will participate in the “nomination” vote which will take place from January 27 to 30. He will appoint a candidate to support from among seven personalities who today do not seem to be able to compete alone with the right-wing candidates and Emmanuel Macron for the first round of the presidential election on April 10.

Mélenchon, Jadot and Hidalgo do not recognize the vote

But three of the seven candidates have so far refused to recognize the result of the vote: the rebellious Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the ecologist Yannick Jadot and the socialist Anne Hidalgo. Former Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira – declared a presidential candidate on Saturday – MEP Pierre Larrouturou and candidates from civil society Charlotte Marchandise and Anna Agueb-Porterie have meanwhile said they would comply with the results.

The spokespersons of the “Popular Primary” Mathilde Imer and Samuel Grzybowski indicated that they would organize, Wednesday January 19 and Thursday January 20, in a media format still to be determined, “hearings” of the candidates or their representatives who will be submitted to a selection of questions formulated by the registrants. “We hope to see EELV, LFI and the PS there. During the online ballot, they said, a badge will indicate whether or not the candidate has agreed to recognize their outcome.

They finally announced that they had “passed the bar of 14,000 small individual donors”. Of the 730,000 euros in donations received as of Saturday, the median donation was 23 euros and 433 people gave more than 200 euros. The “Popular Primary” has also taken out 175,000 euros in loans.
