The market value is enormous, making it “the biggest drug seizure in Malta’s history”. The island’s customs announced on Wednesday that it had made a record seizure of 612 kg of cocaine, for an estimated market value of 69 million euros.
Goods from Ecuador
The drugs were in 510 packages concealed in pallets of cooking oil. The load came from Ecuador and had passed through Colombia before being intercepted in Malta when it was to continue on its way to Libya. “Discrepancies in the scanned images of the shipment prompted officials to conduct a physical inspection of the container,” customs officials said.
“This net is a record because of the high value and quantity in a single container,” they said. “To put things in perspective, a total of 750 kg was intercepted by customs in 2019 in 16 containers.”
