Edison Flores: the man with the most shouted goals by Ricardo Gareca in his process with Peru

Lima, February 2, 2022Updated on 02/02/2022 02:22 pm

One of the most shouted goals for Ricardo Gareca, in these seven years with the Peruvian national team, did not end in victory. Not even in a draw. In October 2016, in one of the most critical moments of the bicolor, Peru faced Chile on a visit by playoffs. The bicolor began to consolidate as a competitive team and had a quite acceptable match at the National Stadium in Santiago. Unfortunately, that journey ended with a 2-1 defeat, although Gareca, in his team environment, always remembers it as one of the bicolor’s best performances as a visitor. “We shouted the goal like that because the team deserved it, it wasn’t enough to score, but it was one of the best performances”, The ‘Tiger’ declared us before the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with the classification already confirmed.

That discount goal against Chile was scored by Edison Flores. All the other goals were decisive for the World Cup four years ago and they are important again on this route to Qatar 2022.

Although during 2020 and 2021, Flores was unable to alternate frequently at his DC United club (he first had a facial injury and then a muscle injury), in the first months of this 2022 he was able to join the work of the Peruvian national team and try to recover his best physical and soccer condition.

The final result is something to keep celebrating: Edison returned to his status as a decisive player and protagonist of important goals in Qualifiers.

-Almost a historic scorer-

In the last six years, Edison Flores has grown as the undisputed player in the Peruvian team. His tactical intelligence has helped him understand when to join the defense and when to step on the rival box. Daniel Peredo’s phrase: “When Flores shows up, things always happen” It has to do with the talent of ‘Orejas’ to be often in the ideal location on the field.

For the 2018 Qualifiers, Flores was one of the top scorers along with Christian Cueva. His five goals led us to a happy loss of voice: to Chile in Santiago, to Paraguay in Asunción, to Uruguay in Lima, to Bolivia in Lima and to Ecuador in Quito. His good average was an effective collaboration to return to a World Cup after 36 years.

As well as Jefferson Farfan in the previous Qualifiers, it is good news that an influential player returns in the last matches to define the passage to a World Cup. That’s Edison Flores. You have to hold your ears up, because the most shouted goal is still a pending issue.
