Peruvian national team and a concern: Why was André Carrillo a substitute in the Club World Cup with Al Hilal?

A Club World Cup It is not only the long-awaited opportunity to obtain sporting glory, but it is also an unbeatable showcase to raise the price in an upcoming transfer market. Although Al Hilal is playing a fairly acceptable role in the tournament, the Peruvian Andre Carrillo could not be displayed as expected. Closely following the broadcasts of this competition in Abu Dhabi has also served to conclude that the Peruvian winger now has more competition to start the matches. Here are some of the reasons for this moment that, if it persists, could lead to concern in the technical command of the national team, only a month and a half before the next Qualifiers date.

Of his four seasons in Al-Hilal, this is the one that is costing Carrillo the most to establish himself in the eleven base. Al Hilal beat South Korea’s Pohang Steelers FC 2-0 and the Peruvian couldn’t even sit on the bench. In this competition it was only possible to have three foreigners and Jardim preferred the Malian Moussa Marega, the Brazilian Matheus Pereira and the French Bafétimbi Gomis.

Carrillo, beyond the competition with other attackers on the squad, had two other factors that postponed him in Jardim’s preferences: in October he suffered a lumbar injury that forced him to take more than a month off from the doctor. In addition, André is a regular summoned in the Peruvian team. ANDHe is the only foreigner from the team who has been absent on FIFA dates in recent months.

In the 6-1 win against Al Jazera, the Peruvian entered at 75 ‘and was able to score a penalty at the close of the match. While in the semifinal, with a 1-0 loss to Chelsea, Carrillo only played the final ten minutes.

In Al Hilal’s preparation for this Club World Cup, Carrillo arrived in the final stretch because he played both games for the Peruvian team, on the last FIFA date, against Colombia and Ecuador. The national winger has no injury problems, his absences in every starting eleven have to do only with Jardim’s technical decisions.

In this 2022, Carrillo has not been able to complete any full game. His record this year is 270 minutes in the field with Al Hilal (30 percent of the total played by the Arab team this year). Until the end of 2021, Carrillo had managed to alternate in attack with the French Gomis and the Malian Marega (quoted today at 9 million euros). Then the Brazilian Matheus Pereira (quoted today at 12 million euros) was included in this scheme, as a down payment.

The panorama changed for Carrillo with the arrival of Nigerian Odion Ighalo (World Cup Russia 2018). With the incorporation of the former United, Jardim modified his basic scheme: he placed Ighalo as ‘9’ in the area and Marega was lined up as an outside attacker (in the place that Carrillo has usually occupied). The 6-1 win against Al Jazera and the correct match against Chelsea are arguments to defend Jardim’s decisions.

In the technical command of the Peruvian team they are attentive to the situation and only hope that André has the hierarchy and competitiveness to add minutes again, as in previous seasons. His contract with Al Hilal expires in June 2023.
