The agreement had been under negotiation for days, after the negotiations with his representative had stopped last September. From the club they did not value the possibility of renewing the lane player’s contract for two seasons, as it had begun to negotiate.

As EFE learned, the salary reduction is substantial and is above 50 percent. Previously it was traded under a higher economic base and for two seasons.

However, the club’s position was to adapt the player’s salary to Barcelona’s new economic reality and not offer him more than one year. The opinion of the coach, Xavi Hernández, has been decisive in the decision to renew the player.

The coach, before the match against Levante, commented that the club already knows his opinion about Sergi Roberto: “We’ll see about the negotiations with the player, he’s about to return”.

The winger played his last game on October 27 in Vallecas, where he had to retire due to discomfort in his right quadriceps. This season he has only participated in nine LaLiga games and three in the Champions League and underwent surgery last December to fix an injury to the rectus femoris in his right leg.

Sergi Roberto’s last contract was signed in February 2018 and expires on June 30 this year. The termination was set at 500 million euros.

Sergi Roberto made his debut with the first team on November 10, 2010, at the age of 18, and has worn the first team shirt in 316 games.
