Bernardo Cuesta, after victory over River Plate: “The team showed hierarchy, claw”

Bernardo Cuesta is synonymous with goals in Melgar not only in Liga 1, but also internationally. On Tuesday night, the striker opened the account in favor of ‘Domino’, in a match that ended with a victory (2-1) over River Plate of Uruguay, for the fourth round of Group B of the Copa Sudamericana.

The victory allowed the team from Arequipa to continue at the top of the table and keep their chances of qualifying for the next round of the competition intact. After the match, Cuesta did not hesitate to highlight the group’s work at the legendary Centenario Stadium.

“It was a hard-fought, tough and suffered victory. It was what we came looking for, then we were left with ten players, but the team showed hierarchy, grit and we were able to win it towards the end”said Cuesta, in statements to DirecTV Sports.

On the other hand, the 33-year-old athlete recognized that the expulsion of goalkeeper Carlos Cáceda at minute 56 meant a hard blow and forced Melgar to withdraw.

“Beyond the fact that we did not enter the second half in the same way, I think that the expulsion conditioned us a lot, it made us withdraw much more and that is why we thought that the victory was eluding us, but we were able to get the victory”, he indicated.

When does Melgar play again in the Copa Sudamericana?

Melgar, leader of his group with nine points, will collide on Wednesday, May 18, with Racing Club, at El Cilindro, for the fifth round of Group B of the Copa Sudamericana.
