The Lolo Route, the pilgrimage that honors the memory of the idol of Universitario, returns this May 15

Their names are David Canales and Jorge Luis Saavedra. Also Miguel Reyes Gavilano. And other more anonymous men and women who dedicate their day to keeping a flame alive: the pilgrimage to Hualcará, the land of the greatest idol of Peruvian soccer, Lolo Fernández. I know them and I know how much the stoppage due to the pandemic cost them. Also, how much energy did they save for this moment, now that they’re back?

There is an incombustible faith that devours them and that in the first days of February 2020 was revived, even more: the official newspaper “El Peruano” published in Legal Norms the official recognition of Lolo’s Routethe pilgrimage of cream fans to Hualcará in memory of Teodoro Fernández, maximum idol of the University Sports Club, who would turn 109 this May 20 and is a holiday for the meringues.

And for them, next Sunday, May 15, they invite the fans of Universitario to travel to the south of Lima, to Cañete, to Hualcará. “We said that we would return and here we are, renewed, pilgrims here we go, because it is time to return! Sunday May 15, our destination: Hacienda Hualcará Cañete, Holy Land”. The great objective, explains David Canales, main promoter of La Ruta, is to rescue the Cañonero hacienda house and add value to it. The dream: a permanent museum.

What is the program? A brief museum will be set up on the figure of Lolo, by the collector Miguel Reyes Gavilano, an artistic show for children with Bowtie and the closing of the party with the tribunera music bands Atados a Un Sentimiento and Sentir Popular. The midfielder Martín Rodríguez, the Lion of the 90s, will also be there and will sign autographs.

But perhaps the most important. The regional councilors of Lima Carlos Alberto Faustino Calderón and Alcibiades Roy Beltrán Gutiérrez will deliver the official recognition to La Ruta de Lolo as a regional and tourist festival right there, in Hualcará. A terrible goal, again, from Lolo.
