Gianluca Lapadula and his scoring streak that excites the team for the playoff

It was the 69th minute this Sunday in Barcelona, when Gianluca Lapadula he emulated Karim Benzema on the pitch. The ‘Bambino’, with great pressure on the New Zealand goalkeeper, Oliver Sail, forced his error and effectively stole the ball in the rival box and then pushed it to the bottom of the goal. In this way, the national ‘9’ -scorer of the only goal- gave victory to the peruvian national team in the friendly (1-0) and once again showed that he is in a great scoring moment, which will undoubtedly be fundamental for the playoff on June 13.

Months before, Lapadula he had dealt with many adversities in Italy. After scoring one of the goals against Paraguay that gave us access to the long-awaited playoff, the ‘Bambino’ spent a little over a month without playing away from the country, with Benevento.

The Peruvian striker did not even appear in the calls for the Italian team in the final dates of Serie B. This hinted that the relationship with his coach, Fabio Caserta, was still broken. But the DT justified his absence with a supposed injury.

“The Lapadula issue is closed, we have left everything aside (the conflicts in January). Currently, he is out because he has an ankle problem”assured Caserta.

After that, the ‘Bambino’ accumulated seven games without playing throughout the month of April. But, fortunately, he managed to return to action in the final day of Serie B in the best possible way: venting all his frustration with a goal (1-2 loss to SPAL).

The important thing is that Gianluca stayed on that goalscoring path. The Peruvian striker was key for Benevento to reach the semi-finals of the Italian promotion playoffs: he scored the only goal in the victory (1-0) over Ascoli. In the semis, he also scored in the first leg against Pisa (1-0), but in the second leg he couldn’t celebrate and his team was left empty-handed after falling for the same result and being worse placed (7th) in the board than his rival (3rd).

This represented a hard blow for Lapadula, who dreamed of returning to Serie A with Benevento despite everything. But he had to turn the page quickly to focus on the challenges with the national team. And now he has just shown, in the friendly against New Zealand, that he is fully focused.

Lapadula has been able to maintain his goalscoring essence in recent weeks with a key goal against the New Zealanders, which excites all Peruvians ahead of the playoffs. Now, the ‘Bambino’ hopes to continue on that path against Australia or the United Arab Emirates, in order to fulfill his dream of attending the first World Cup of his career, in Qatar 2022.
