Marcelo Bielsa will coach Athletic Bilbao if Arechabaleta is elected president

Former Olympique de Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed that he will take over as coach of Athletic Bilbao if Inaki Arechabaleta wins the presidency of the Basque club. The Argentinian technician appeared in a video broadcast during the press conference organized this Monday by Arechabaleta, one of the three candidates in the elections scheduled for Friday.

Marcelo Bielsa, who already coached Bilbao between 2011 and 2013, was approached in March but took his time before giving an answer because “it is a very great responsibility to assume this commitment to train a team like Athletic,” he said in the video.

The Argentinian was full of praise for the Basque team, which he considers to be “comparable in quality” compared to the team he managed to take to the Europa League final against Spain. Atletico Madrid (lost 3-0). Bielsa, currently without a contract after his dismissal from Leeds at the end of February, could take the place of coach Marcelino, who no longer wishes to continue the adventure in the Basque Country.
