Former Brazilian soccer international Richarlyson has revealed he is bisexual and said he now wonders if things will “get better” after years of homophobic abuse in the sport.
Richarlyson, who played for Brazil in 2008, said in a podcast published by Grupo Globo on Friday that he decided to speak out after many people urged him to take a stand.
”Today I have decided to speak: I am bisexual. If that’s what was missing, there it is. Now I want to see if things really get better, that’s my question”, said Richardlyson.
”All my life I’ve been asked if I’m gay. I have dated men and also women. (…) I am normal, I have desires“, he claimed.
Richarlyson, a former left back and midfielder, played for some of Brazil’s top clubs including São Paulo FC and Atlético Mineiro.
He won the national league three times, as well as a FIFA Club World Cup with São Paulo and the Copa Libertadores with Atlético Mineiro.
At 39, he is a sports commentator on the Globo and SporTV stations.
