What result does Melgar need to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals?

After playing the first 90 minutes of the Melgar vs. Deportivo Califor the round of 16 of the South American Cup 2022the ‘Domino’ team is already thinking about what will be the second leg that will be played at the UNSA Monumental Stadium, in Arequipa.

At the Deportivo Cali Stadium, the people of Arequipa had the clearest scoring chances, but they were not fine in the definition. Now, with the first leg 0-0, what result do they need to qualify for the quarter-finals?

Melgar must win by any goal difference. The same for the Colombians: if they win, they stay in the race. Of course, in case of a tie in Arequipa (either 0-0, 1-1, 2-2…), the winner will be defined from the penalty shootout. There will be no extra time.

IS IT WORTH DOUBLE THE AWAY GOAL IN THE SOUTH AMERICAN?

This year, Conmebol followed the decision adopted by UEFA in its continental competitions and, consequently, eliminated the away goal rule in the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and Recopa round-trip series.

Thus, since the round of 16 of 2022, the law that was implemented since the direct elimination matches of the Libertadores 2005 ceases to be valid.
