The 2022 edition of the Tour de France starts this Friday in Copenhagen with a 13 km time trial. Fans of the Big Loop will once again be able to marvel at the exploits of their favourites. But also in front of their bikes, light years away from the ordinary man’s bike. In terms of performance of course, but also price…
Commercially available bicycles
Carbon frames, latest-generation disc brakes, electronic transmission… Tour de France bikes are concentrates of technology combining speed and reliability. These two-wheelers are commercially available and therefore accessible to everyone. You still have to have the budget that goes with it. The cheapest of the bunch cost around 6,000, according to the site Sports and leisures.
Yellow jersey for several days during the previous edition of the Grande Boucle, the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, rode with a Canyon Aeroad CFR available online at a price of 8,500 euros. But according to France Live, it was necessary to pay around 1,000 euros more to afford the exact copy of the bicycle of the grandson of Raymond Poulidor.
Up to 15,000 euros
During the 2021 Tour, the Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 of world champion Julian Alaphilippe cost 13,200 euros. The most expensive bikes in the peloton are around 15,000 euros. This was particularly the case with the Pinarello Dogma F. of the Ineos team or the Clonage V3 RS of the Slovenian winner Tadej Pogacar.
And these dizzying prices are those of “classic” bikes. The cars used only for the time trial can reach 20,000 euros. Just the rear wheel can be worth 3,000 euros, says France Live.
Professional bikes have evolved a lot over the years, especially in terms of weight. Today, many frames do not exceed 850 grams while that of Raymond Poulidor weighed 2.5 kg. As a reminder, the current regulations impose a minimum weight of 6.8 kg for bicycles.
