R. Dominican Republic and Guatemala U-20 achieve historic qualification for the World Cup: Mexico was left out

The Concacaf Under-20 Championship remains in dispute and there were surprise results during the quarterfinal round. The most outstanding details were that Mexico will not be able to play the World Cup in the category, nor the 2024 Olympic Games; while the Dominican Republic managed to qualify for a World Cup for the first time in its history, considering all categories.

Everything happened on the day of last Wednesday, which started with the victory of the Dominican squad over Jamaica (1-0), after the early goal by Ángel Montes De Oca (10 ‘). In this way, those led by coach Mariano Pérez Tejada entered the semifinals and, therefore, secured the ticket to the 2023 Indonesian World Cup.

After completing the victory at the Metropolitan Olympic Stadium in San Pedro de Sula, Honduras, the Dominican Republic U-20 team began to celebrate effusively for the award obtained. Historically, according to MisterChip, this team has never played in a World Cup, in any category.

However, the Dominican squad still has one more goal: they must defeat Guatemala U-20 and qualify for the final of the Concacaf Championship, which automatically grants a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Precisely, the Guatemalan team is also in the U-20 World Cup, the second in its record (it previously attended in 2011), after leaving Mexico empty-handed, in the penalty round (2-1). The ‘Tri’ had started losing, but reacted in the final stretch with the leading role of Esteban Lozano: he scored the tie at 74 ‘and missed a maximum penalty at 88 ‘, which could change history.

In this way, the Mexican U-20 team will not attend the World Cup, which they had qualified for consecutively in the last five editions (they did not go to Egypt 2009 for the last time). In addition, having no options to go to the final of the Concacaf Under-20 Championship, those led by Luis Pérez will not go to the Olympic Games either.
