In 2018 Juan Abraham Pinto was murdered, for which the Prosecutor’s Office asks for 12 years in prison for Luis Núñez and another 2 for serious injuries. “If I didn’t shoot, how are they going to give me 15 years,” the aforementioned complains.

“They had a discussion inside the house about skirts. We were outside when we heard the argument. We entered the house and there it went up in tone. At that moment, the discussion turned into a shootout., Núñez told from prison on March 7 of last year to the Chilean newspaper La Tercera. “I felt a shot and there I ran. Impossible to keep looking at who was shooting. I managed to leave the house so that the shots did not reach me, ”he added in that same interview.

His situation worsened in 2020 when he fled the country. In February of that year he was arrested in Bolivia (Cochabamba) after 14 months on the run.

Today, confined, awaiting the final decision, Luis Núñez lives bitter days, very different from when he wore the shirts of the U Católica, Palestino and the University of Peru itself. “He is desperate, destroyed, undone,” his lawyer Juan Hernández tells the same medium.

A Luis Nunez everyone remembers him as a quiet person during his childhood. He is a fan of the ‘U’ Católica and also supported Juventud Norambuena because he grew up practically close to its headquarters in La Legua. His dream was to be a professional soccer player, he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Iván Zamorano.

“He was skinny, but very talented; cachañero, that was the main quality of him. Over time we turned it into a creative flyer”Óscar Meneses, who was head of the lower divisions of the Catholic University in 1990, recalled it in statements to the Chilean press. “In training he always showed conditions. We even moved him up a division, so he could play in mine. He was always in the group of projection players”added Fernando Díaz who was also part of the technical command.

He arrived in Peru in 2007 and had a short stay in University of Sports. Already at that time he was aware of his problems with the justice system in his country. In 2003 he was accused of lending the apartment to Los Ciprianos, a drug gang dedicated to drug sales. The accusation detailed that his house was a possible warehouse.

“He was there for a short time but he came to have a special connection with the fan. He was good technically but he also scored. I remember a goal that he scored on the last date of the Clausura 2007 when he approached the North grandstand and made a gesture of apologizing for not having won the title ”says Kenyi Peña, a journalist who knows the history of the ‘U’ like few others.

After his brief stint at Ate, ‘Gordo Núñez’ —as Mayer Candelo called him— returned to his country to play for the ‘U’ Católica, Palestino and Ñublense. From this last club he left due to problems with coach Jorge Aravena. In 2010 the door of foreign football was opened again. The Catholic ‘U’ of Ecuador hired him, but he did not last long. The following year he returned to Chile to play for O’Higgins, Huachipato and Deportes Concepción, until he retired in 2012, after being arrested by the Investigative Police for being involved in a gang dedicated to theft of ATMs.

“I feel like when he lost his mom, he went downhill. He sunk a lot. I think that was a before and after in his life”. Claudio Toro, a journalist who was directed by Núñez when he was in the lower Norambuena and grew up in the same neighborhood as the Chilean player where the sale of marijuana and crime in its splendor was normalized, recounted the fact that perhaps twisted the life of the ex-striker .

In 2014 he was accused of financing a business of drug trafficking with ties to La Legua and Bolivia, but the turning point in his story occurred in 2018 with eight shots fired on Francisco Zárate street in La Legua, after which he was charged with consummated homicide, two frustrated homicides and a crime of minor injuries. He fled.

What happened that day was a shot in the leg for Mario Albornoz who was going to a store to buy with Juan Pinto who was shot in the head from behind (“cranioencephalic wound by bullet, no projectile exit”, according to the police report). Both were part of the rival neighborhood and it is presumed that the shots were fired by his companion nicknamed “Guatón” Andrés Vergara. A woman who screamed on the spot was also shot in the hand. Since then, Nunez He was chased around every corner.

Today his story is very far from what was his time on the soccer fields. In the next few days his future will be defined and it looks very complicated.
