Olympiacos wants to renew James Rodríguez before the transfer window begins

James Rodríguez’s stay in Greece could be extended for longer than initially thought, since the Olympiacos board intends to renew his contract as soon as possible. Let’s remember that last September, the midfielder left the ranks of Al-Rayyan in Qatar, where he could not establish himself, and signed for a season with the Piraeus club.

In principle, the Greek institution only insured the Colombian for one year, due to the doubts surrounding his performance. However, any questioning has been cleared up and the leaders are rushing to advance talks to expand the agreement, according to newspaper La Luz.

According to the aforementioned source, Olympiacos wants to have James Rodríguez on its squad for at least one more season and does not want to wait until the transfer market to make it official. The reason for the club’s haste has to do with the FIFA rule: the footballer may negotiate with any team six months before the end of his contract.

In this sense, the former Real Madrid player will be open to listening to options in the next winter transfer window (beginning of 2023). Taking into account that the end of the Qatar 2022 World Cup will be very close, it is expected that there will be many transfers in the main leagues in Europe.

Due to this detail, Olympiacos will make every effort to ensure James’ stay within coach Míchel González’s squad. It is worth mentioning that in the current season of the Greek Super League, the midfielder has two assists and two goals in eight appearances.

For now, Rodríguez is working with the Colombian team, under the orders of coach Néstor Lorenzo, since he will play a friendly against his counterpart from Paraguay, at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale (Saturday, November 19, from 8:00 p.m. ).
