World Cup: After defeating Argentina, Saudi Arabia declares Wednesday a day off

The move is huge. Just like a reward. King Salman of Saudi Arabia has declared Wednesday a public holiday following Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup victory on Tuesday, Arab media reported. Therefore, tomorrow will be a holiday for all employees and students in the country. King Salman was introduced by his heir apparent son and Saudi Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman in the official gallery along with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Herve Renard, the French coach of the Saudi Arabia national team, after this feat emphasized the “unforgettable victory”: “It will go down in history, and this is the main thing. (…) I feel light. Congratulations to these fantastic players, I always congratulate them, and I have been doing this for three years. The stars aligned for us. We must not forget that Argentina remains a fantastic team, they have not lost in 36 games. They are the reigning champions of the America’s Cup. But that’s football, that’s the way it is. Sometimes it’s crazy.”

This success is undoubtedly the most important in Saudi Arabia’s qualifying history since the 1994 match against Belgium (1-0), also during the group stage.
