Jorge Barraza received an award from FIFA and AIPS for being one of the journalists who covered the most world cups

Jorge Barraza stands up in the space that FIFA, the AIPS (Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive) has prepared in Doha, Qatar, to celebrate the journalists who covered the most World Cups. What is said to be simple is, however, the summary of a remarkable career: they are men who saw the first Pelé, the best Maradona, the exceptional Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

And while Barraza, a columnist for El Comercio’s Total Sport, a teacher all the time but above all, a friend 24 hours a day, stands up to receive the award from the hands of the Ronaldo Phenomenon, a complicit smile is stamped here, on all the reporters who cover the World Cup from Lima for El Comercio. Yours is an award that makes us proud.

Ronaldo Nazario, O Phenomenon, gave each of the 69 award-winning chroniclers a replica of the World Cup; 69 among 12,500 who are accredited in Qatar 2022. Enrique Macaya Márquez, a figure of Argentine television, was the star of the ceremony since he worked in 17 World Cups without interruption since Sweden 1958. Macaya is 88 years old and has a program that leaves from Qatar. In descending order, Hartmut Scherzer, from Germany, was in 16 and brought the 16 credentials he was awarded. And Jorge Da Silveyra, from Uruguay, attended 15. Then all the others.

Jorge’s case is monumental, I covered 11 World Cups. It was an emotional event, led by Gianni Merlo, AIPS President, which took place at the Doha Press Center.

Of those 11, I have read it in the last 6. First, when I was a journalism student in the last cycle and I dreamed -as I still dream today- of writing like those gentlemen of the sports supplement that you read, dad; later, at home, glued to the prints that Carlos Salas or Mario Fernández pasted on those partitions that separated us from the rest of the sections, there in Lampa, and I looked for metaphors or definitions, to copy them; and finally now, as a partner in the Sunday edition of DT, in which Jorge’s brilliance forces me to read it before publishing and, above all, to run to the kiosk to buy as many copies as possible.

The hug we didn’t give each other in Doha I’ll take to Buenos Aires, Jorge. Soon.
